Amplified blocks are attained when you use the HED on a redstone, lapis, gold, diamond, emerald, or obsidian block. They can only be picked up with nether star tools or the super tool or else they will explode in an explosion larger than TNT.
All amplified blocks can be crafted into a smaller version like ingots. These are used to make amplified tools as well as some parts of the super tool.
